TL;DR

AI agents for business are programs built on a language model that complete multi-step work inside a company's tools, such as drafting the follow-up after a sales call, answering a support ticket from the help center or preparing a weekly status from tickets and Slack. They come in three types: personal agents that work for one employee, function agents that do one job such as support or sales, and builder platforms for making your own. Whichever you buy, an agent is only as good as what it knows about the company, what it is allowed to see, and when it has to ask a person first. Sentra, the managed organization memory for teams and AI agents, supplies the first two from your Slack, email, meetings and docs with each source's permissions, and Sentra Agent is a personal agent built on it that waits for approval before it sends, books or posts.

What are AI agents for business?

A chatbot answers the question you type. An agent is given a goal and works toward it across several steps and several systems: it reads, decides what to do next, uses tools and reports back. In a business setting that means reading from systems of record such as the CRM or the ticket queue, writing to them when allowed, and doing it under the company's rules rather than a consumer app's.

Large companies usually buy agents as part of a platform rollout, which we cover in our guide to enterprise AI agents. This page is for the more common case: a small or mid-size company, or one team inside a larger one, deciding which agents to try first and what they need to be useful.

The three types of AI agents for business

TypeWhat it doesExamplesWatch out for
Personal and assistant agentsWork for one employee across email, calendar, meetings and the browserSentra Agent, Lindy, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT agentKnowing only one inbox, and acting without asking
Function agentsDo one job end to end, such as support tickets, sales follow-up or IT requestsIntercom Fin, Salesforce AgentforceAnswering from outdated help pages or missing decisions made outside their system
Builder platformsLet you design your own agents and connect them to your appsZapier Agents, Microsoft Copilot Studio, LindyEvery agent you build needs its own context and permissions

Underneath all three sits a fourth layer that is easy to miss: the company context the agents read. Without it, each agent knows only what its own product can see, and two agents can give a customer two different answers.

AI agent examples by department

  • Sales. Before each call, an agent prepares an account brief from the CRM, recent email and the last meeting, and afterwards it drafts the follow-up and updates the deal. It fails when a price or term changed in a Slack thread it never saw.
  • Customer support. An agent resolves routine tickets from the help center and the customer's history, and hands the rest to a person with a summary. It fails when the help page describes a process the team changed last month.
  • Operations and finance. An agent checks invoices against contracts and purchase orders and flags exceptions. It fails when the renegotiated terms live in an email rather than the contract file.
  • Engineering. A coding agent works with knowledge of the codebase, past incidents and architecture decisions, so it does not undo a fix from March.
  • People and HR. An agent answers policy questions and walks new hires through their first weeks. It fails when the answer depends on a decision announced in a meeting.
  • Leadership. A personal agent tracks the commitments a manager made across calls and threads and chases the ones about to slip. Our comparison of AI executive assistants covers the options.

The failure in every example is the same. The agent could do the work, but it did not know something the company knew.

What every business agent needs

Company context

An agent needs current facts: who the customer is, what was agreed, what the policy is today and who owns what. Most of that lives in conversations rather than documents. Sentra reads Slack, email, meetings, calendar, docs and project tools such as GitHub, Linear, Jira and HubSpot, keeps each fact with its source and the newest version on top, and serves the same memory to people in Slack and to agents over MCP and REST. Agents then work from what the company currently knows instead of whatever one tool indexed.

Permissions

An agent acting for a person should see only what that person could open in the source tool. This is the rule that stops an agent from quoting a salary spreadsheet to someone who should never have seen it. In Sentra, permissions follow the source, Slack DMs are excluded from answers, and admins assign data-access roles for email, meetings and files. Our guide to AI agent permissions goes deeper on delegated access and governance.

Approvals and guardrails

Reading and drafting can be automatic. Anything that leaves the company, such as an email, a booking or a payment, should wait for a person, at least until the agent has earned more trust. The company should also be able to set rules the agent cannot break. Sentra Agent waits for approval before it sends, books or posts, and follows guardrails the company sets, such as a spend limit per booking or systems it may never touch.

Skipping these three is how companies end up with shadow AI: employees adopt agents on their own, with company data in tools nobody approved.

How to choose AI agents for your business

  • Start from one workflow that costs real time, such as call follow-ups or tier-one support, and measure it before and after.
  • Ask what the agent reads. If it only sees its own product's data, plan for the decisions and conversations it will miss.
  • Ask what it does without asking. Prefer agents that draft freely but wait for approval before anything leaves.
  • Check permissions. The agent should inherit the access of the person it acts for, not a shared admin account.
  • Check pricing units. Agents are priced per seat, per conversation, per resolution or per credit, and the cheapest unit is not always the cheapest bill.
  • Plan for more than one agent. Most companies end up with several, so give them one shared memory rather than letting each build its own.

These options are not all alternatives to each other. A support team can run Fin, a sales team can run Agentforce and every employee can have a personal agent. Sentra sits underneath them as the shared memory: on the Enterprise plan, any agent that speaks MCP or REST can read the same current facts with the permissions of the person it acts for.

A sensible first 30 days

1. Pick one workflow and one owner. Call follow-ups and meeting preparation are good first choices because the results are easy to see.

2. Connect the company's context first. Connect Slack, email, calendar and the CRM to Sentra so the agent starts from what the company knows.

3. Keep approvals on. Let the agent draft everything and send nothing without a yes until the team trusts it.

4. Review the misses. When the agent gets something wrong, find out whether it lacked a fact or lacked a rule, and fix that rather than the prompt.

5. Add the second agent. Once the first one proves itself, add the next workflow on the same memory.

How do I keep AI agents from leaking company data?

Make each agent inherit the permissions of the person it acts for, keep approvals on for anything that leaves the company, and give employees a sanctioned option so they do not paste data into tools nobody approved.

Do AI agents replace employees?

In practice they take over repetitive steps within a job, such as drafting, looking things up and routine replies, while people keep the decisions and the relationships.
